Modifying Street Tree Spacing to Maximize Canopy

A study conducted for the Village of Oak Park, Illinois determined that the narrow spacing between mature shade trees was undermining the health of the urban forestry canopy. The direct result was a system that encouraged poor crown development, increased maintenance costs, increased risk exposure, reduced tree age and reduced environmental contribution.
