The Use and Abuse of Logical Fallacies in Tree-Related Conflicts (Online)

TOPICS TO BE COVERED

Logical fallacies are statements of fact that contain errors in reasoning. When provided as an opinion, they often lack necessary context, rendering the opinion suspect. In arboriculture and urban forestry, logical fallacies often mischaracterize an organization or tree care company’s program and policies. They arise in a range of tree-related conflicts.  Such as, between neighbors, residents and their town, developers and towns, and litigation.  Unchallenged, the fallacy can become a fact for the purposes of argumentation. The ability to identify and challenge logical fallacies is critical to one’s practice. This session will describe twelve common logical fallacies in tree-related conflicts. Examples will include:

  • The analogical fallacy
  • Loaded words
  • The complex question
  • Argumentum ad Nauseum
  • Confirming the consequent

With each type of logical fallacy, suggestions in the course are provided to help identify, analyze, and counter the logic presented.
